My script puts together s CSV file from a report that has some portions that a fixed with tables and some that are not. Here is an example what the source file looks like:

I need to copy the section heading, paste it at the end of line effectively creating a new column and repeat until the heading changes. I also must capture the header from the top of the file as well, Note that there is nothing beneath the third line. I tried to remove the headings after the copy by removing lines not starting a number, but that deleted the third line and others similar to it. There are many other problems with my code, but I can live with any quirk other than invalid data. As it stands now, some sections of data are landing in the wrong columns, but not all. Column $pn seems to drop in the middle of $line, but only for some headings.

I know there are tools for working with fixed width files, but I cannot add anything to the machine that this program will be deployed on (either an old SparcStation or an old HP-UX box). So if it does not come with the workstation's version of Unix, I can't install it. But any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Yes, even you can use CPAN

    Other than that, maybe you should start with one of the many problems, show us some input you got, some output you get and the results you would want. Preferrably reduce your program to the smallest set of lines that exhibits the problem.

    As for your general approach, I find unpack to be a good tool when working with fixed-width data, and also regular expressions, depending on whether the fixed length data is delimited or not.

    As for your variable names, $col00 is a bad name, and $col01 is even worse. Most likely you want to use an array @col, or potentially, a hash %col in which you'd store $col{ vol } for example, thus switching from positions to names in the process.

    This is almost how the file appears before I try to crunch it. I say almost because there some odd formatting bugs when I paste it into the window. This is actually common for these files only look right on the host system and some text editors as not all elements move in a copy. This is result data for one test and there can be many in the same file; everything repeats and the serial number increments. I picked one with some fails so the oddity of this system can be highlighted: Fails are flagged and passes are usually implied, but not always. The areas where columns are changing positions come up as errors when I open the file in a spreadsheet: Lotus Symphony gives an invalid character error, while Google Docs claims a parse error (as in a poorly written function).

    This my output which allows me to pull everything into a spreadsheet or a database. I have to copy the header info to maintain full traceability to each test set. The swopping normally happens at test series six through eight and 16 through 19 (column one has the test series numbers).
