You could try looking at the module's test suite - that's often an excellent way of gaining insight in to a module's working. There's also an excellent book: Perl Template Toolkit, First Edition (but, it turns out that link is broken). Googling for template toolkit slides has some promising links. There's been some articles written about the Template Toolkit on http:///www.perl.com, too.
