FYI, Perl already has all the necessary scaffolding in place to do this as a command-line one-liner:

 perl -ibak -pe 's/cps\*\*\*/nat***/g' filename
[download]

Indeed. I usually use something like `find . -name \*.txt -print0 \| xargs -0 perl -pi -w -e 's/find/replace/ +g'` [download] which I got from One-line shell script for find and replace. HTH, planetscape	[reply] [d/l]
