"There is an update to IO that is required that I am not allowed to make." Then I guess it's time you raise this issue with the powers that be at your place of work. When building Perl for our clients fleet of Solaris servers I had to get the sysadmins to update various components, gcc and build tools among others. I appreciate that sometimes it can be difficult to state a case within certain organisations, depending on the policies surrounding such matters.
