In non-interpolated strings, a double-backslash is interpreted as a single back slash.

print '\\.', "\n", '\.', "\n"; ------ \. \.

If you look at the docs for split, it specifically says it's expecting a /PATTERN/. So it interprets both '\\.' and '\.' as /\./.
