    These are details that would have been nice to see in the original post. Adding requirements post-by-post is a painful process--I'm sure you're missing some possibly valuable help because of insufficient details.

    So you basically answered Corion's question incorrectly. He wasn't really asking the *reason* for removing the third line, but how to determine that it was the line to remove. If the illegal characters are irrelevent, you should have mentioned the relevent attributes of the line that will let us know what line(s) to delete.
