perlrun says of -n: causes Perl to assume the following loop around your program, which makes it iterate over filename arguments somewhat like sed -n or awk: `LINE: while (<>) { ... # your program goes here }` [download] So, perl replaces '`...`' with jwkrahn's '`}{print $.`'.
