Here is the error that i get:

" Unable to connect to xxx.yyy.com: IO::Socket::INET: connect: Connection refused at ./chk_mail_imapclient_.pl line 9. "

Do yourself a favour and ask your Exchange admin which protocols are available on the Exchange server, and on which ports. The error message you posted, combined with your code shown above, means that IMAPS (= IMAP + SSL) is not available. It does not say anything about the availability of unencrypted IMAP.
