Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I need to make a gui. I would like to use a gui designer. To the best of my knowledge the only toolkit available to my is Tk. I have perl 5.10 on linux. (Is Tk part of the std. distribution?) What is the best designer for me? Or am I better off doing it by hand? Using something other than Tk (may not be possible as I don't have root.) Thx, A

Or am I better off doing it by hand?

Yes, by far, you are better off learning to do it by hand. Why? Because you will learn how the GUI toolkit actually works, the GUI designer throws you a fish, instead of teaching you how to fish. :-)

Learning the intricacies of a GUI designer takes as long as learning the basics manually.

guido. vptk. visualcamel. komodo is supposed to be good. anything now dead/to be avoided? an earlier discussion
As for me wxwidgets is interesting as gui to perl. it more compatible to OS design(use design from OS GUI, has more candy options), but for me this choise is bad because I can't find fully analog for canvas widget from TK. this module compatible with windows and unix(I try one function in old times).

there were many attempts to create GUI designer, and I do not know of any succeeded one.

There are some good designers for Tk (but not perl/Tk), such as vtcl, but this requires using different approach to Tk.

FWIW, I used to use specPerl, which was based on specTCL. But now I usually just copy and paste code in from older scripts and modify as needed. Unfortunately, GUI development is one of Perl's weaknesses.
