declaration or what?

tehmina has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

hi, i am a beginner in perl and i have to implement VSM in perl. i got some code while googling but as i am new, i cannot understand the meaning of simple statements for example i dont know what the following stataement is doing: my (%keywordNums, $numKeywords, @doc, @docVector); somebody plz help

That's a simple lexical declaration of variables. Your level is indeed very beginner so I recommend you start out with a book or tutorial in Perl, before jumping in both feet. "Learning Perl" by Randal Schwarz is an excellent book, but yopu might muddle along with an online tutorial, like the online version of SImon Cozen's "Beginning Perl". Once you get some familiarity with the language you can use the reference manual, either at your computer console or on the web. The most important parts here are perlfunc, and perlop.	[reply]

Yes. Its declaring a list of variables in one go. You'll want to read up on the basics before you get too far from shore; see: http://perldoc.perl.org/perlintro.html If your browser isn't exactly 970 pixels wide, then http://userstyles.org/styles/20328 will make it more readable too.	[reply]
