Esteemed Monks,

Given that I assume each of us has taken a vow of poverty, not to mention chastity and the like, is it acceptable to fellow monks to offer to pay for help or is it better to make a request for help, and put any possible compensation (gold dubloons and the like) into the fund for the new Monastery Roof.

Regards

Brother Steve

is it acceptable to fellow monks to offer to pay for help

If you mean by that to get a monk to answer a question on Perl Monks for you, then I'd say "no." The whole point of this online community is for it to be a resource for the Perl community at large. Part of that being a resource means the free exchange of information in the form of help, questions answered, impacts of feet on someone's gluteous maximus or whatever is needed (or desired.)

I'm not even sure the gods would be amiable to having folks advertise looking for professional services. We try and avoid spam around here and commercial advertising of any sort would be highly frowned up.

If, however, in the course of a private conversation either through the message facility or an offline conversation you and a monk here agreed to some sort of contract involving the exchange of money/barter/favors/trinkets/whatever then what goes on between consenting adults is of no concern of the Monastery.

If you're trying to raise funds then I'd suggest a donation drive for the cause, not a pay to play.

If you'll notice in the upper right hand corner of any given page on the Monastery is a link to the offering plate. Feel free to donate to your heart's conent.

If you need help with a specific task and are willing to pay someone to see it through then I would first mention it in the Chatterbox. See if anyone is interested or knows of someone who may be. If this is an ongoing need it may be more appropriate to post this on your home node and direct people to it. (Either, again, in the CB or possibly your signature temporarily)

Otherwise, as has been mentioned, I'm sure they'll make room for your generosity on the offering plate. :)

Following rjbs blog post "promoting little gifts", in my opinion, the same advice could be extended to people offering their help for free in web sites like this one.

Perlmonks is not a freelancing service, and I'd prefer it if it stayed that way. There are other freelancing sites (though I know of none Perl specific).

As others have pointed out, donations are of course very welcome.

Given that I assume each of us has taken a vow of poverty, not to mention chastity and the like,
Silly monk! Pick a better pantheon to worship. My gods supply me with an endless supply of wealth and young people of my preferred gender. And no, you can't have my pantheon, they only accept one worshipper.
And no, you can't have my pantheon, they only accept one worshipper.

Worshipping on your own? My school warned me about the dangers of that, so now I try to make sure I have at least one acolyte present.

      Just a something something...
