That means that the first open() call failed. Either `use autodie;` in the beginning, or write your calls as `open my $IN, '<', 'transaction' or die "Cannot open 'transaction' for +reading: $!"; ... while (<$IN>) { ... }` [download] (And adapt the code for the second file accordingly).
