    For web projects I would personally consider Melody. It's a content management system that came from Movable Type. (Very much like Wordpress) It's built with mostly Perl modules and there are a lot of ways to contribute to the project.

    Another project would be Perl Dancer for web applications. I'm not sure how appropriate that would be for a beginner but it's worth taking a look at.
