Reading usb virtual keyboard.

fruff has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi guys! I would like to read from a usb barcode scanner, which is acting as an virtual keyboard. Although <STDIN> works, it requires my script to be run on login. Is there any way to let the script start om bootup and read from my usb device "keyboard" without login?
