    I'll bite ... it probably works in IE because you've set up your trust domains to allow cross domain XMLHttpRequests. This is an unholy sin and you should seek penance now. Think about it, if you have control over *all* the browsers, this MS/IE only approach will work. If you have no control over the browsers, this is just the road to hell (and I'm not convinced you're paving it with good intentions).
