Siemens S7?

cavac has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Has anybody ever tried to exchange data with a Siemens S7 PLC? I couldn't find any relevant discussions, nor does Google provide any help.

The plan is to use either Windows or Linux to run a communication link via Ethernet or Profibus to the PLC to exchange data for visualization through a webserver (the data itself would be exchanged by a background worker and stored in a database).

Any ideas how to get started?
