And even if I could find my way through their defences to actually download it, I still wouldn't feel able to use it for anything important.

I'd be way too nervous that if something I wrote using it suddenly became successful, that it might either disappear or get hamstrung, or they would come after me for payment.

Why? Cos that the way they've always been. In 1990-something during a stand-up, coffee break discussion at a conference, a couple of guys put a hypothetical scenario to LE, and he threatened to sue them right there and then just for thinking it.

You know, you could have made that point in your first reply The fact remains, the license hasn't changed, berkeleydb is still just as free and open source as it ever was, oracle hasn't changed the license	[reply]

The licence may not have changed, but the ownership has. You could trust Sun, they understood the ethos. You cannot say the same for Oracle.
