Thanks everyone, for the input. Rather than spend any more time searching, I'm going to dig into the module I've already written, clean up the code, and spend some time meditating on ways to use it to get closer to my goal. I may regret not having put more effort into this issue later on, but I don't want to linger over this problem any longer.
