Problem in installing the Digest::MD5.pm module

TGhosh has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi, I'm trying to install Spreadsheet Parse & Write module in AIX Unix in a nonn standard way(I don't have root access so I'm installing it in my own folder). After installing the Parse & Write module I got the error message "Can't locate Digest/Perl/MD5.pm in @INC", so I tried to install the Digest::MD5 module. But the 'make' command was giving me the error message "make: The error code from the last command is 127.". Please see the whole message below:

Can any one please help me out here? I do I need to do to install the Md%?

`/bin/sh: cc_r: not found` You need a C compiler — more specifically, the IBMŽ XL C/C++ compiler (part of which is the `cc_r` program), because that's what your Perl binary has been built with. That said, an easier/cheaper way out would probably be to use the pure-Perl variant Digest::MD5::Perl instead. It is significantly slower, though, but depending on how much data you actually need to compute digests for, this might be a non-issue... Alternatively, you could build your own perl from scratch with the free `gcc` compiler, in which case you could then build extension modules with the same compiler.	[reply] [d/l] [select]

Digest::MD5 is a core module since perl 5.7.3. SInce your perl seems to be 5.8.8, it should already come with that module. If not, your perl installation might be incomplete. Please consult your OS manual about how to complete the installation (for example under Debian Linux, you need to install the `perl-modules` package and not just `perl` Perl 6 - second systems done right	[reply] [d/l] [select]

Rereading your post, I realize the original error message you got was "Can't locate Digest/Perl/MD5.pm in @INC". In other words, you were trying to install the wrong module (i.e. the XS version Digest::MD5) in order to fix that problem... Anyhow, moritz is right, Digest::MD5 already was a core module with 5.8 installations, and even with the AIX system Perl (just checked on an AIX 6.1 box that shipped with perl-5.8.2). So, unless you're planning to do further installations of other XS modules in the future, there might be no need to go to the trouble of installing your own Perl, or some such. All you'd need to do is find out what exactly is trying to load `Digest::Perl::MD5`, and edit that (plus maybe other occurrences of "Digest::Perl::MD5") to use `Digest::MD5` instead. Please use code tags around your commands for readability. From what I can decipher, it looks like you just ran make with all those options yourself from the command line. Why not a: `perl Makefile.PL make make test make install` [download]	[reply] [d/l]
