    Actually, I discovered that for my purposes, what I needed was not so much "killing" a thread, as simply sending it a signal to end, which I did with Thread::Queue, with no troubles.

      Interesting. How did you arrange to read the queue and the socket at the same time?

        Sorry, I was using the wrong terminology. I meant 'signal' in a generic sense of 'message'. No sockets.
