I don't have much to add to the conversation, but my one anecdote: A couple years ago I needed to find a vc system for "very large" files — 1 to 100 gigabytes in size. Binary files of arbitrary structure (e.g. Oracle dumps) such that management of diffs by delta was not feasible. The result of my market survey identified Mercurial based on the availability of plug-in modules for handling unusual vc needs such as this. (But for all I know, git has similar capabilities. If it did at that time, I wasn't able to find it easily.)
