MarieGrana has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi PerlMonks!

I'm a newbie here. Perl got my attention so I decided to study it myself. I downloaded Strawberry Perl 5.14.1.2 (32 bit) on http://strawberryperl.com/ for my windows. After downloading, I tried to install it but something went wrong while installing. It showed a message box that says: "This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Package". Any thoughts? Can please someone help me? Thanks!

    Hello MarieGrana,

Did you check that the download completed successfully? You can calculate the SHA-1 hash of your downloaded file (for example, here online), and compare it with the expected result listed here.

      Hi Athanasius,

Yes. The download completed successfully. I tried downloading and installing it more than twice. Still, I end up with that error message. I'll do what you've said. Hope it would work. Thanks!

make sure that you are running the installation with administrator privileges on Windows 7

      --kmx

What version of Windows are you using?

Also, have you tried the recommended stable release: Strawberry Perl 5.14.2.1?

      Hi Ambrus,

Yes, actually that's what I've downloaded and I'm using Windows7. Is it working on that Windows version? I tried downloading and installing it for more than twice. Still, it shows that error message. Oh, poor me. :(

Yes, it does work on Windows 7.

An alternative to Strawberry Perl for Windows 7 is ActiveState Perl, which is also available for free.
