in thread Approximate Delivery Date from USPS
I wasn't saying it's bad that publicly-run entities distort the market. I was just saying that they do, and that makes it impossible to know what the market would do without them. Just because no private shipping company offers something like media mail now, when the USPS has a mandated-by-law low-price monopoly on it, doesn't mean that they wouldn't offer something like that if USPS disappeared. They might or might not, and it might be cheap or expensive. We can't know, because we're not looking at market forces.
As I tried to say earlier, I'm not looking to get rid of the post office, though I think the need for it is dwindling. But it's A) clearly constitutional, B) mostly pays for itself, C) provides a real service, and D) hires citizens and pays them a good wage. That puts it ahead of 99% of federal programs in my book (including some entire departments), and ahead of plenty of large corporations too.
