You can try adding the typemap entry for const char from the perl 5.8.8 ExtUtils/typemap to your local /opt/perl/5.6.1/lib/perl/ExtUtils/typemap

Add the following line above the INPUT and OUTPUT lines: 

const char *        T_PV

    Thanks joost, modifying typemap worked! Meanwhile, we decided to move to shiny new Linux, just for HTML::Tidy. Thanks.
