One way to do it might be a tied filehandle - see perltie and Tie::Handle.

Oops, scratch that suggestion since you're using stat, from perltie: Tied filehandles are still incomplete. sysopen(), truncate(), flock(), fcntl(), stat() and -X can't currently be trapped. On the topic of mocking stat and -X: Mock/Fake network fileshare for my new modules Test Suite	[reply]
