Nokia has released a "port of Perl 5.8.x and 5.9.x to the Symbian smartphone platform. The port is known to work in the Nokia Series 60 phones(*), but there is no reason other Series 60 or Symbian devices shouldn't work. (Series 60 is a software platform on top of the Symbian operating system.) The port is copyright Nokia and licensed under the same terms as Perl itself."

In The Register we read: Right now developers had two choices if they wanted to be sure an application will run on a Series 60 device. There's the native Symbian C++ APIs, which offer lots of power but a steep learning curve, and Java. But even Java is overkill for simple forms-based applications that are typically knocked up by business managers, rather than developers; and Java doesn't always offer access to native resources such as vibrating alert or SMS.

Erik Smartt adds: "Unlike Python for Series 60, the Perl port comes as-is, with no support and limited access to the device itself. But... you've got the source code."

While Matt Croydon says: "Don't expect it to be pretty, but it's great to see it "out in the wild."

(*) Series 60 licensees include LG Electronics, Lenovo, Nokia, Panasonic, Samsung, Sendo, and Siemens. The Nokia models that use Series 60 are 3650/3600, 3660/3620, 6260, 6600, 6620, 6630, 7610, 7650, N-Gage, and N-Gage QD.
