So I packed up in less than a day and followed my heart here to Houston, getting here in time to take my atheistic soul to midnight mass on Christmas Eve to watch a woman sing in the choir, if that gives you some idea where I'm at.

At home, I've never had to fret about having machines and accounts for learning--my job, my friends, and my old university all helped keep me wired. But now I'm in a city where I know exactly one person, and I'm helpless.

I'm not broke, and I have a couple of 486s of my own, but that's about it. They make okay desktops, but they are old and have rather small drives, and one of them (a laptop which needs a monitor and keyboard to function) may die soon.

I've never had to cope with building my own hardware before, and I'd like advice:

How do I acquire, cheaply while I job hunt, what I need to keep learning? To extend my knowledge of Perl, yes, but also to become a more ecumenical monk, whose practice is Perl but will break bread with a good-hearted devotee of any sect.

Like I said, I'm an atheist--but when I was at mass, I opened my heart and asked the priest for a blessing.

No, I don't believe--but yes, I felt blessed.

Update: No, I didn't get the woman, but coming to Houston was the right move--and now I'm elsewhere.
