If you were using xchat, your best bet is to use hexchat. xchat stopped active maint in 2010. By that time the people that maintained the Windows version forked of to hexchat, which is OpenSource (no payments needed for the Windows build) and very actively maintained.

I use hexchat with the #cbstream channel on freenode to follow PerlMonks.
