It's not "wrong" to do things to arguments. Many of Perl's functions do this already... chomp, chop, substr, splice, push, vec, ... You could do the same: 
sub add_ten {
  $_[0] += 10;
}

$x = 20;
add_ten($x);
print $x;  # 30
