I don't think it's a case of being brutal so much as being really irritated with someone playing Hide The Post with us. A simple "On second thought, maybe this isn't such a good idea ..." edit added at the top of the OP (and marked as an update) would have been enough to get the idea across, and would still have allowed the useful contributions of tobyink and no_slogan.
