Try NEdit for XWindows. It has syntax highlighting, macro programming, and more. I use vi if I'm stuck at a command-line, and NEdit otherwise.
I will admit, I came from a windows background, but live in Linux-land now. NEdit has a Windows-ish feel to it, which I like.
