Which is all well and good provided you don't mind locking your program into platform dependency. The program may never be going anywhere, but it's still worth cultivating good practice.

The 'solution' you offer is a bad example of quite spectacular proportions. Why is $varerror used twice? Where are -w and use strict? Why backticks instead of system? What happens if xcopy isn't in the path? And so on...
