Still being new to perl I am not clear where the values of these variables in both of these subs are coming from? 
sub thumb_with_gd
my ($infile, $outfile, $image, $error, $x, $y,
            $width, $height, $thumb);

sub thumbnail_dimensions
my ($x, $y, $ratio, $height, $width);
