I have been trying different ways of doing this for a long time now and cant seam to find a solution. I am looking for any solution, either a hack on the server or client side, or a proper solution.

Heres the problem:

I want to start up a perl script that runs constantly (this is a socket server and MUST run constantly). Starting this script from a command prompt is no problem.

I want to be able to start the script from a CGI script through a browser. All my attempts at doing this so far result in the browser timing out. The script will be started but my status message will not be displayed.

I have tried forking, using exec(), forking and exec() together but they all time out.

Is there a solution where I can run my script from a browser, then break the connection with the socket server and display a 'Server started' message in the browser?

Thanks in advance
