Two suggestions:

• Use a data format that can be extended, like YAML.
• If you insist on using XML, then parse it by pushing a fake root around of the file:

  use XML::Simple;
  my $content = do { local (*ARGV, $/); @ARGV = "mylogfile"; <> };
  my $parsed_logfile = XMLin("<fake>$content</fake>", \%other_options);
  [download]
