I wrote a script for the first time which used $. (the variable for the line-number of the current line in a file read) I assumed that the first line would be line zero, but it was line one.

I think I've become a second-stage newbie for thinking it was going to be zero-based. Please help me on my way to third-stage by telling me why it isn't?
