Update: tpyo was fixed. The rest of my comment is pretty irrelevant now.

One thing that had me confused, though, until I tinkered around with it, was a tpyo toward the end of your blackblock:

A space XORed with a space yields a null (\000). A space XORed with a ) yields a newline (\n).

Should have been:

A space XORed with a space yields a null (\000). A _hash_ XORed with a ) yields a newline (\n).

As demonstrated by: 

god@hermes:~$ perl -e ' print "  ##" ^ " ) )" ' | od -c
0000000  \0  \t 003  \n
0000004
