??? man rdist ???
Update OK - after getting totally slated for this post, I'll lengthen the reply. Rdist is a program distributed with most flavours of Linux, that allows you to keep files in multiple locations in sync. It strikes me that this is at least part of your problem (ie needing to compile modules on the server, non-standard locations) which could be avoided using the rdist tool.
