Sweet -- this is exactly the discussion I wanted to see, and a nice answer. I thought of 'ref' earlier, but my perldoc tells me: 
Builtin types include:

  ARRAY

  REF
  GLOB
  LVALUE
...so I didn't think it was possible. Thank you.
