Don't worry, it's just a personal thing ;-). So I re-wrote my original code (which I'll probably never use again since it's proved so fragile):

my %totals;
while ( <DATA> ) {
   chomp;
   /(^[a-z].*$)/i or $totals{$1} += $_;
}
