Have you read the original posting by Duff? (Well, semi-original ;) http://www.lysator.liu.se/c/duffs-device.html.

I don't think there is a valid use for this in Perl. It was designed for extreme reasons of speed; whereas it's likely something you would code in Perl wouldn't have those concerns.
