IMHO, this misunderstanding comes from the poor knowledge most programmers have. I've seen tons of code in large systems where the only choice was/is Perl otherwise the rapid developement will be impossible or the mess in the code which comes from more than 10 programmers' stupidity will crash server farms. The common programmer does not have good understanding what's large project and what are the alternatives for such one.
