hey monks

I have a number that I want to relate to an array, and find the closest element in the array without going over. I have already tried:

#!/usr/bin/env perl use strict; use warnings; my @array = (1,4,5,6,7,9,10,23,34,44,55,56,57,59,70,80,90,100); print "\nenter number\n"; chomp (my $find = <STDIN>); my $itr=0; foreach my $number (@array){ $itr++ and next if $find >= $number; } print $array[$itr-1]

and it works, but it has to iterate over the entire array, which just seems wasteful, if I am going to repeatably perform this function. Can anyone think of a faster way to do this?

thanks!
