hello again keepers of the code.
can somone tell me a better way to do this? it does not feel "perly" enough. 
 $_ = $value;
 $value = m/(\d+)/;

i tried. 
 $value =~ /(\d+)/;

but i obviously do not fully understand the " =~ " operator..
bows low...
beware the farmers.
