If you have no exposure to any of the environments in which this happens, your point of view may not reflect the reality of the situation.

People already use the raspberry pi for all this, perhaps you just haven't seen them or researched this? There is nothing restricting the use of the raspberry pi to class based experimentation.

Hobbies and activities, especially relatively low/no cost tend to be a gateway for people (especially the young) to learning things. If you have no way to learn something, you'll never be in a position to put it to 'practical use'.
