Flame has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hello,

I was told not too long ago, of a program that could convert perl programs to Windows executables, PerlApp. I have managed to locate it... but there seems to be a problem. The installer keeps saying that PerlApp can't work on Windows(95, 98, ME). Is this true? And if so, what should I be installing it on?

Thanks

Try perl2exe. It does run under Win98.

The App you make will run under win98. PerlApp itself won't. It requires the Win32 functions for manipulating the image's resources (it works by stuffing the script into a resource of the unpaker, instead of concatenating it like most self..whatever programs).

Install on Windows NT, 2000, or XP.

    Flame,
I have used a program called perl2exe and it has worked very well. You can do a google search for it and download it. I wouldn't bet the ranch on it, but i don't think it is dependant on Win NT, 2k etc. Good luck.

Hmm, I tried to use Perl2Exe... but I have a problem... It's being used for a GUI program, and I can't afford the 'Pro' version. (After all, I'm not selling the program I'm compiling... and I'm next to broke anyway) :(

No need. As long as you include all the modules that you are using for the gui and you use the latest shareware version, it should not be a probelm. Just do not use the suggested -gui argument and I am sure that you will find it will work fine. Works for me. : )
If you don't want it to be a console program but rather a windows program, then I have a script that will do that trick for you once you have your program converted it to a *.exe.
I only have that code handy at home, but if you are interested then let me know and I will post it here. : )
