The number of times I've visited irc channels with apparently hundreds of occupants, and yet nothing is said for hours and days on end, far outweighs those where any actual conversation was going on; and those where any conversation was actually relevant to the subject is minuscule.

Other than the constant pointless stream of X joined, Y left, Y joined again, Y changed his handle to _Y; _Y changed his handle to Y....useful information on irc is the very definition of a needle in a haystack.

The Perl 6 irc channel has online public accessible logs. You can see the ongoing discussions for yourself. Today 15 July 2018 . This is not a channel where people just come and go and change handles, this is where people ask and answer questions, discuss changes to Perl 6, etc.	[reply]

well, there is more than one way to measure activity I think the fact that Perl6 will have a proper IDE https://commaide.com/ is a very good sign I think the level of activity on Perl6 project on github is a good sign https://github.com/croservices/cro https://github.com/croservices/cro-core https://github.com/ugexe/zef https://github.com/rakudo/rakudo And level of activity on the Perl6.org site and the level of activity on twitter and the number of videos on youtube and even the level of activity on this small facebook group I see all of this as good signs And the Perl6 irc channel, is actually active and fun, but you probably need to start the conversation Perl6 does have a small, but active community, and hopefully it will get better Perl6 is a far more interesting language, than most language in active development today One can wish, that more developers from Perl5 will start being part of Perl6 ... but if this doesnt happen, well it is what is This small facebook group is a small nice and fun group, you are welcome to join the fun	[reply]

The funnier number is the 300+ in irc. That made me curious about Slack. The first search result I found for "Perl 6 Slack" shows 68 people in 11 channels, while the first search result not about writing bots for "Python programming Slack" shows 14,557 members. Now there's an obvious difference between "number of people in channels" and "number of members of a community", but I'm not sure that IRC is skating to where the puck is here.	[reply]

Slack's a proprietary chat system a lot like IRC but with a graphical interface that's made it more popular with less technical folks as well as people who didn't grow up with IRC. I'm generally agreeing with you here.	[reply]
