Well, you have several options;
You can either try NetPBM or check out Gallery
It's a great web based photo album that works with PHP
I hope that helps | [reply] |

I am working with an existing script. I would just like to change a few things... for one, its does not use a thumbnail at all, it just loads the entire image and scales it to 50x50 with html. Thats unproductive in my opinion. I'm going to edit the script myself so that if a user uploads an image, its automaticly converted to a thumbnail. I don't have shell access at all to my freebsd 4.7 server, so I can only use binaries. That NetPBM looks good. Do you think the binary for fbsd 4.2 will work on my server? I searched it up on cpan though, and didn't find anything.. where could I get some docs for perl.

I Found out what I'm going to use. My server does have GD, so I am using GD and Image::Thumbnail which uses GD to create the thumbnail. The only part of it that I don't like is that it only lets me specify size=n where n = the longest side of the picture in pixels. I would rather be able to set say the width, and have the side scale down. Any pointers? | [reply] |

Just use GD.pm directly to change the image size. It will let you specify any two integer values for length and width. Try looking into the GD documentation for details.
Update: It looks like you'd want to use the 'copyResized' method.-caedes

Ok. Well I decided to just live with that Image::Thumbnail module which uses GD to resize the image. But now I'm not sure I like the quality too much.
OLD script: I like it, but I like my site to look uniform, and that script just looked too retro to me, and I didn't want to edit every UI option.

NEW script: I like the UI, but the problem with this one was that it did NOT use thumbnails at all. I changed it first so that it looked to ./thumb/ for thumbnail images. That worked. Then I wanted to make it so when people upload images, it automaticly created thumbnails for them. I edited the script, and it works, but I'm not a big fan of the quality I'm getting in the thumbnails.

After I looked at the old script, I realized its not much worst, but I would still like to pump up the quality with GD if I could. Any pointers there? | [reply] |

GD does no interpolation on the image when it resizes. If you want smooth images after a resize (like you would get in Photoshop) you'll have to use a more advanced editing library like Image::Magick.-caedes

Grr. Thats just the thing. I can't use that because my server doesn't have ImageMagick on their server. I emailed them asking them to install it for me, so I'm still crossing my fingers.

I emailed my system administrator and asked if he would install ImageMagick for me. I had talked to many people who said that when they asked their sys admins, they installed it for them. Mine said he would not. I asked if I could get ssh access to install it myself on my own account (ssh comes with the next level package with my hosting company). He replied and said that no I could not get ssh access and now that the software would not be installed on his system. I assume he means that if I were to install it myself, I would break some contract and he would uninstall it for me.
Now what could I do? Do any of you know of any binaries (for fbsd 4.7) that can be uploaded by ftp and will meet the requirements for my PerlMagick? | [reply] |
