Fellow Monks,

Moving at glacial speed toward the path down hacker enlightenment, I went out and picked up a $75 used computer and installed RedHat 7.0 on it. This is my first Linux system. I have a couple of questions:

First, what's the best software available for cranking out Perl scripts? Is everyone just using vi or is there some super wham-o-dyne editor out there I should be looking into?

RedHat 7.0 comes with Perl 5.6.0. I want to upgrade to 5.6.1. What's the best way to do this? Should I go with an ActiveState rpm binary? Should I go right to the source and compile it myself (something I'm not entirely comfortable doing yet)? Does it even matter?

Any other general advice for running Perl on Linux would be great and appreciated. Thanks!
