I use

for $i (1..shift(@ARGV)) {
  sleep 60/(2 ** $i) unless fork;
}
system(@ARGV);

to divide the 1 minute minimum crontab interval into even parts.
The fork prevents the duration of the system call from having effect on the start-time of the other calls (and I like tree structures). Unfortunatly this could produce zombies. How could I prevent this?
